DOT vs. Non-DOT — what's the difference?

Specimen collection breaks into two big regulatory worlds. Most working collectors are trained in both.

DOT (federally regulated)

DOT urine collections — 49 CFR Part 40

Required for safety-sensitive transportation workers. Federal chain-of-custody form, split specimen, strict 4-minute temperature window. One mistake can void the test under audit.

Industries

Trucking / CDL drivers, aviation (FAA), rail (FRA), transit (FTA), pipeline (PHMSA), maritime (USCG), school bus, hazmat carriers.

Test reasons

Pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, follow-up.

Non-DOT (employer / clinical)

Non-DOT collections

Anything outside federal transportation rules. Employer-policy driven — typically 5-panel or 10-panel urine, with optional hair, oral fluid, or alcohol add-ons.

Industries

Warehouse & distribution, construction, manufacturing, healthcare, oil & gas, security, education, retail, attorneys, courts, probation.

Test reasons

Pre-employment, post-accident (OSHA), court-ordered, custody, probation, school admission, athletic.

Which program is right for you?

Who it's for: Brand-new collectors who just want to get certified and start applying for jobs at established clinics.

What it covers: DOT and non-DOT urine collection fundamentals, chain of custody, donor handling, federal CCF form completion.

Where you'll work: Clinics, urgent care, occupational health labs, MRO offices, third-party administrators (TPAs).

Skip if: Not enough if you plan to handle hair or oral fluid, run your own mobile business, or work post-accident scenes.

Professional Certification — $249

Who it's for: Career-track collectors who want live instruction, hands-on feedback, and help getting hired.

What it covers: Everything in Basic + live virtual sessions, mock collections, resume + interview prep, job-readiness coaching.

Where you'll work: Occupational health clinics, employer on-site programs, hospital systems, larger TPAs that prefer trained hires.

Skip if: Skip if you only want a certificate to keep on file and don't need the live coaching.

Hair, Oral & Urine — $249

Who it's for: Collectors who want to serve executive screening, longer-detection-window cases, and observed collections.

What it covers: All three specimen types — urine + hair (90-day detection) + oral fluid (recent use, observed).

Where you'll work: Executive pre-employment, safety-sensitive non-DOT, attorneys, child-custody cases, mobile/on-site providers.

Skip if: Skip if your target clients only need DOT urine — Basic or Professional is more cost-effective.

Advanced Career Package

Who it's for: Future business owners who want the full stack — certification plus the business systems to go independent.

What it covers: Everything above + post-accident playbooks, mobile/on-site protocols, client pitch, pricing strategy.

Where you'll work: Independent mobile providers, sub-contractors to TPAs, full specimen collection company owners.

Skip if: Overkill if you only want a paycheck job at someone else's clinic.
